![]() TB: You had a peak at “Arrogantly opinionated rant #406” by Here is Your Mind. For me, I just want to tour, record good albums, and enjoy our lifestyle as a band. I guess if you really believe in something, then talk about it. I do understand that there are kids out there that preach about it. They would probably drink more if we didn’t have so many gigs to attend (laughs). Do we have fun on tour? Shit yes! I’m proud of the fact that I can still have fun without the help of going into a different state of being. And I am more than happy to talk about it. I don’t really talk about it unless asked about it. Straight edge is only brought up in interviews like this because the media, the people are fascinated in it. Or that you guys must be very preachy about clean living. I guess some people would feel that PWD have no fun on tour. The straight-edge culture is something that I think is often misunderstood. TB: You’ve never shied away from mentioning the fact that you don’t drink, smoke, take drugs and that you’re a vegan. But it’s so awesome to see bands that look up to you, and at the same time, you see them as a major influence on your live shows for instance. TB: From the way you’re talking now, you sound like a seasoned veteran. They’re all pretty talented bands and definitely push bands like ourselves to the limit and make us play better at our shows. These days we are mainly influenced by bands that are relatively new. The Misfits, Ramones, Metallica, Bad Religion, Maylene, everything. Myself and Jeff (Ling) were veryu much into everything. Coming from Byron Bay and hearing about some of the massive bands touring about Australia and somewhat missing out on those concerts, made me want to start a band. WM: For me personally I really enjoyed listening to anything growing up. TB: As far as influences go, who do you cite as some of your main influences. With Joe, we took our time, and worked hard on cleaning up the sound and making sure it had more of a metal feel to it. Adam D was fun to work with but we never had a lot of time with him because of his commitments to Killswitch Engage. Joe Baressi was so great to work with and very much a visionary. ![]() I’m so proud of the sound and direction we took on Deep Blue. WM: There would be some disappointment amongst fans. I got the feeling that many PWD fans were a bit upset you didn’t go with Adam Dutkiewicz again. TB: The new album is certainly a step away from what you have done before. We signed to them because we knew it was a big label, but also small enough where you felt comfortable to express yourself and I always knew that environment would help us grow. ![]() Do you think it’s partly down to the fact that they are signed to Epitaph Records? TB: I admire what they have done it’s fantastic. Even if you aren’t a fan, you have to admit that was a pretty proud moment for hardcore/metal. Their album debuted on the British Charts and on the Australian charts at number one. TB: Things are certainly going well in the world of alt-rock. It’s an award that is great reward not so much for us, but for the way the alternative scene works so hard to push the music to the masses. TB: Also I nearly forgot, congratulations on the ARIA. We work really hard to make sure our gigs are awesome and that the kids are having fun. Interviews are great and I love doing them while on tour because it gets me away from the mayhem that is Parkway Drive and touring (laughs). It depends what you get up to in your spare time. Does constant touring make you a better band? TB: That is something that Parkway Drive has always been passionate about. I’ve loved every minute but it is good to be home and not having to worry about our next show for a while. We’ve toured non-stop for probably a year. ![]() Also, I aim to explain why it took the DVD to form a solid impression of the band as possibly the greatest artists presently representative of their genre and heralds the band as exemplary ambassadors for Australian music, in general…īyrnes: Hey Winston, is it good to finally be having a break? METRO hopes to present a comprehensive review in coming weeks as I explore PARKWAY DRIVE: The DVD in detail as potentially a benchmark for contemporary metal music. Together, they discuss the festival circuit, “ selling out”, their recent ARIA success and other topics following the release of Parkway’s new live video (see clip below). for Epitath Records and founder of Brisbane’s burgeoning Mannequin Republic Mgmt, Tom Byrnes* returns to METRO and shares a brief, light-hearted interview with Winston McCall (vocals). The inaugural No Sleep ‘Til series of hardcore music festivals kicks off in approximately a fortnight featuring Megadeth (covering seminal album Rust in Peace), The Dropkick Murphy’s and a very impressive list of artists including our own Parkway Drive. ![]()
